Edu Gaspar confirmed as Arsenal technical director in new role under Raul Sanllehi

Former Arsenal midfielder Edu Gaspar has returned to the club as Technical Director.

The Brazilian had been working as General Coordinator for the Brazil national team who won the Copa America on Sunday evening.

It was their first major senior trophy in 12 years while Unai Emery has already enjoyed the benefits of Edu's arrival this summer.

Gabriel Martinelli became the first signing of the transfer window for Arsenal earlier this month.

The young forward had been extensively scouted by the club on the say so of the Brazilian, whose role will be to oversee recruitment at the Emirates Stadium and the London Colney training base.

He ultimately replaces Sven Mislintat, the former Borussia Dortmund transfer chief.

The German lasted less than a year at Arsenal before deciding to move on. He is now at Stuttgart.

During his career as a player, Edu played for three clubs with two spells at Corinthians either side of his time with Arsenal and Valencia in Spain.

He left north London in 2005 after making 127 appearances and winning two Premier League titles as one of the Invincibles and the FA Cup on two occasions.

In 2011 he took on the Director Of Football role at Corinthians before becoming General Coordinator of the Brazilian national team.

Edu also assisted Carlos Quieroz at the 2014 World Cup with Iran.

Following the departure of former Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis last year, Arsenal have restructured the club hierarchy.

Ex-Barcelona transfer chief Raul Sanllehi is now Head Of Football, and will oversee Edu's work.

The Spaniard is partnered by Managing Director Vinai Venkatesham who has taken on the commercial tasks previously owned by Gazidis.

Francis Cagigao will assist Edu in his duties as the new Head Of Recruitment having impressed as a scout for the Gunners to identify players such as Cesc Fabregas, Hector Bellerin and Lauren.
