Edu handed boost to repeat Liverpool transfer trick and seal Arsenal's first January deal

Dominik Szoboszlai could leave Red Bull Salzburg when the January transfer window opens.

And that is fantastic news for Arsenal who were first linked with a move for the Hungary international in the summer of 2019 and scouts have been keeping close tabs on the midfielder ever since.

Interest in Szoboszlai is high with AC Milan and Serie A rivals Napoli among his suitors, while Gazzetta Dello Sport claim RB Leipzig are also tracking his progress ahead of the new year.

But is a January move on the cards for Szoboszlai?

Calum Chambers previews Dundalk vs Arsenal

Well, Red Bull Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch previously has hinted at a January exit for the 20-year-old.

"Yes," Marsch told Futbol with Grant Wahl. "The reality is that a guy like Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to have many suitors this winter.

"He's an incredbile talent, and I say this: When you coach young players, you have to love them and love the fact that they're going to move on and love that they're going to have big opportunities to prove themselves and show how good they are.

"If you're only worried about how it affects your success, then you're not really going to ever be effective at coaching and leading young people.

"So with a guy like Dominik, I mean, I want him to show everybody in the world how good he is.

"So let's see what happens, but I would be surprised if he winds up staying past winter. We play with teenagers, and of course when they do well a lot of clubs get really excited."

Furthermore, recent history suggests that Red Bull Salzburg are willing to do business if the price is right.

Just under a year ago, the Austrian side sold Erling Haaland and Takumi Minamino to Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool respectively, recouping £24m in the process.

It helped that Salzburg had dropped into the Europa League before the winter window opened, and the same has happened this season after they failed to beat Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

With that said, Liverpool and Dortmund were quick off the mark to get those deals done.

Salzburg's failure to reach the Champions League knockout phase does hand Arsenal technical director Edu a major boost and if he was to repeat this transfer trick then Szoboszlai could be the Gunners' first major signing of 2021.

Interestingly, Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that a decision on the attacking midfielder's futured could be made as early as next week.

"We will have Szoboszlai's decision by the next week. Leipzig would be the easiest solution because they are in the same family with Redbull," Romano said."Milan are always in contact. Arsenal have also been in contact for many years."
