Edu can repeat Marquinhos transfer trick to help Arsenal complete £86m January signing

Arsenal have somewhat of an advantage in the race to sign Palmeiras talent Danilo in the future thanks to the club's technical director Edu and his extensive list of contacts within the South American market.

The Gunners explored a deal for the midfielder in the summer, with GOAL Brazil reporting that a £20million bid had been made. However, any hopes of securing his signature were short-lived after Palmeiras made it clear that he was not for sale.

Edu is a long-term admirer of Danilo, who was first linked to Arsenal in January. His ability to operate as both a defensive and central midfielder as well as offering a progressive style of play fits the profile of player the club is looking for, with the injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny highlighting the worrying shortage of defensive-minded options available to Mikel Arteta if either is unavailable.

One of the main reasons for Palmeiras not wanting to lose the 21-year-old in recent months was their involvement in the Copa Libertadores semi-finals. Additionally, the Brazilian transfer window closed earlier, making it difficult for them to bring in a replacement.

Although this summer's attempts to sign him were ultimately unsuccessful, the deal could be revisited in January, football.london understands. This was also hinted at by Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Arsenal will keep 'following' the Brazilian market after the signing of Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.

"Wolves wanted Marquinhos too, but Arsenal have been faster thanks to Edu’s relationship with Sao Paulo," Romano said. "Arsenal are convinced he’s a top talent for present and future, and for sure the club will keep following the Brazilian market as Edu has great relationships there."

Viewed as one of the most talented young midfielders in Brazil and a key player for his side, Danilo is unlikely to come cheap. Reports suggest he has an £86million release clause included in his contract, though Palmeiras could reluctantly soften their stance moving forward with there likely to be an acceptance that interest will only continue to mount.
