Edu can repeat Gabriel Martinelli transfer trick to address major issue in Mikel Arteta's squad

Arsenal are reportedly scouting the Brazilian transfer market once again as Mikel Arteta looks to address his side's problems in front of goal.

The Gunners' start to the Premier League season has been hampered by a lack of goals. They've netted just nine times in their opening eight games and have failed to score in three of their last four outings.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored once from open play, Alexandre Lacazette is without a goal in six games across all competitions, while Willian, Nicolas Pepe, and Eddie Nketiah have two league goals between them so far.

As a result, all signs are pointing towards Arteta bolstering his attacking options in 2021, with football.london revealing in October that Celtic's Odsonne Edouard and Red Bull Salzburg's Patson Daka are Arsenal targets.

However, it would appear that the club aren't just scouting the UK and Europe to solve their evident goalscoring issues.

According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal have turned their attentions to Sao Paulo youngster Brenner.

A 20-year-old forward who has scored 17 goals in 27 appearances in his breakthrough season in Brazil, is also said to be attracting interest from Paris Saint-Germain as well as Serie A trio Juventus, AC Milan, and Lazio.

Furthermore, the report states that Brenner while Brenner has a £45m release clause in his contract, Sao Paulo could accept as little as half (£22.5m) because of the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the fact that his deal expires in 2022.

In a massive boost for the Gunners should they wish to pursue a deal for the youngster is that has an Italian passport, thus any move would not require a work permit.

And if the north London outfit manage to secure the signing of Brenner, it will be the second time in the space of two-and-a-half years in which they will have signed one of Brazil's most promising youngsters.

Gabriel Martinelli became Arsenal’s first summer signing when he completed a £6m transfer in early July 2018.

Not many were aware of Martinelli when the 2018/2019 campaign ended, but impressed last season 2019/2020 - prior to injury - as he scored 10 goals across all competitions, including strikes away at Liverpool and Chelsea.

Such has been the forward's success in the capital, that the club may be about to repeat the trick.

Former Head of international recruitment Francis Cagigao and current Technical Director Edu are understood to have been the key figures in brokering a deal to bring Martinelli to north London from Ituano.

Following the departure of the former in the summer, Edu has taken up more responsibility regarding Arsenal transfers and his connections in Brazil could be an advantage.
