Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could finally get his wish at Arsenal this summer.
Prior to signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, there was plenty of speculation regarding the 31-year-old's future as he was in the final 12 months of his deal at the end of last season.
At one stage it appeared Arsenal could grant Aubameyang's reported request of being reunited with Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele in order to convince him to stay.
Of course, that wasn't the case as the Gunners did not make a move for the Frenchman - despite links last summer - and still managed to secure the future of their captain.
However, things could change in the next transfer window - if the north London outfit are actually interested in a player who has struggled with injury since arriving at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2017.
Ironically, it is partly down to Dembele's initial £96.8m, potentially rising to £135.5m transfer fee that has left Barcelona in financial difficulty that could spark a clearout this summer.
As per iNews, in June 2020, KPMG’s report on the financial state of clubs prior to the pandemic revealed that Barcelona's net debt stood at £274.2million.
Simply put, the La Liga giants need money and that would explain their statement regarding not withdrawing from the European Super League as it would have been a "historical error to turn down the opportunity."
Prior to the six Premier League clubs - including Arsenal - withdrawing from the breakaway competition, each team were reportedly promised a €200m-€300m "welcome bonus" by JP Morgan Chase, the US investment bank backing the project.
It remains to be seen if the European Super League plan ever gets off the ground, but it if doesn't then Barcelona may have to raise funds by selling key players.
And the one season Aubameyang and Dembele spent together at Borussia Dortmund should be enough to convince Edu to try and complete a deal for the Arsenal captain's dream signing.
The 2016/2017 campaign saw Dembele register a total of 12 assists in the Bundesliga, ten of which were for Aubameyang thus making the pair most deadly duo in Europe's top five leagues that season.
A closer look at those assists and you will notice the Gabon international pulling to the back post and the then-21-year-old providing a perfectly weighted cross.
The return to this combination coupled could be a sign that Arsenal are going places.
However, there's a major problem.
With Gabriel Martinelli, Willian, Reiss Nelson, Emile Smith Rowe, and Nicolas Pepe all options out wide, it's a position where the Gunners are well stocked, so a deal for Dembele looks highly unlikely, as things stand.
