Edson Mexer explains why he snubbed Rangers for Bordeaux

Edson Mexer has explained why he chose to sign for Bordeaux despite interest from Rangers .

The centre-back penned a four-year deal to switch from Rennes to their Ligue 1 rivals last week.

Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard met with the 30-year-old in France but appeared to know the game was up when asked about a potential deal as Mexer joined Bordeaux hours later.

But the Mozambique international is adamant his choice was not financially motivated and instead pointed to the influence of his new manager Paulo Sousa.

He told Web Girodins : "It was not a question of money.

"Paulo Sousa called me and told me about his very ambitious project, he told me that I was his number one choice in central defence and he wanted to make me a leader of his team.

"I felt his attachment and the willingness of the club who did not hesitate to offer me a four-year contract. At my age, it's a parameter that counts.

"It is above all great proof of his confidence.

"Of course, money counts for a footballer, but ambitions are also important.”

The snub leaves Gerrard searching for alternative defensive options ahead of the transfer window.

He's now turned his attention to Oldham stopper George Edmundson, who has earned rave reviews for his performances in England's League Two this season.

The 21-year-old was reportedly given a tour of Rangers' Hummel Training Centre last week and is also attracting interest from the likes of Sunderland, Stoke City and Hull City.
