Edouard Mendy to start against Man City as Chelsea share Mason Mount injury update

Chelsea have been dealt mixed news on the injury front ahead of the Premier League showdown with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

Having been rated as doubtful in the build-up, Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will start between the posts for the Blues this Saturday lunchtime (12.30pm).

That was confirmed by coach Thomas Tuchel during his pre-match press conference for the City game.

Mason Mount and United States captain Christian Pulisic are unavailable for selection, though, while frontman Timo Werner (calf) is another Chelsea player currently nursing an injury.

A key member of the England squad that reached the Euro 2020 final this summer, Mount featured in the midweek Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa, even scoring a penalty during the shoot-out after picking up a minor problem - initially unbeknown to the player himself.

Providing a fitness update on Mount, Tuchel said: "He's very disappointed and didn't feel it during the match. He played through the injury and finished the game. He was confident enough to take a penalty, an important penalty in the shoot-out, so it was a bit of a surprise.

"The steps for recovery he is doing right now are huge. It would maybe be possible that he played if the game was one day later. It is a minor injury, but it is a disappointment for him and us because he is a player that we count on.

"It is the same, no matter how much we rely on him, the task is to find solutions without him and bring him back as soon as possible."

Before the Mount injury, Chelsea had been without Pulisic since he returned from international duty - while Werner nursed a calf problem throughout his goalscoring outing against Villa.

Mendy was absent from games against Tottenham and the Villans after suffering a blow vs Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Champions League.

However, the number one goalkeeper is back and will head-up the team sheet against City tomorrow lunchtime.
