Edouard Mendy returns, Romelu Lukaku's fine form: Four things spotted in Chelsea training

Chelsea are preparing for a mouthwatering Premier League clash with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues go into the game at Stamford Bridge unbeaten after their first five league matches and come up against last season's champions - whose start has not been as impressive.

City have won three, lost one and drawn one in their first five matches of the new season and will be looking to make a serious statement in west London at the weekend.

Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, will be determined to secure his fourth successive victory against Pep Guardiola, but will be well aware of the challenges City can pose.

Tuchel has been putting his squad through their paces on Friday ahead of the visit of the champions and football.london has taken a close look at the new images uploaded and here is what we have spotted.

Mendy returns to action

Edouard Mendy was in Chelsea training at Cobham on Friday as the goalkeeper prepares for his comeback.

Tuchel confirmed in his pre-match press conference on Friday that the Senegal international will start the game for the hosts at Stamford Bridge, despite Kepa Arrizabalaga impressing over the past couple of matches.

Mendy has been sidelined for Chelsea since picking up a minor hip problem against Zenit St Petersburg in the Champions League recently.

Lukaku fires home

Romelu Lukaku has been nothing short of sensational since returning to Chelsea for £97.5million last month.

The Belgium international has scored four goals in six games since arriving back in west London and will be looking to continue his fine form against City on Saturday.

Lukaku was often criticised in the past, especially during his days with Manchester United, for not showing up in the so-called bigger games and this weekend is a chance to prove some of his doubters wrong.

It looked as if Lukaku was in fine form in training on Friday, though, with the former Inter Milan striker chipping the ball over Kepa in goal.

Midfield duo present

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley both featured in Chelsea's midweek victory over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

The former, Loftus-Cheek, played the full 90 minutes in the penalty shootout win and massively impressed some Blues supporters with his display.

Meanwhile, Barkley made a rare appearance, coming on for the final quarter of an hour for Hakim Ziyech against the club he spent last season on loan with.

Both midfielders will be desperate for a place in Tuchel's squad on Saturday and will be hoping their displays on Wednesday did enough to convince the Chelsea boss to include them in his plans.

No Mount in training

Tuchel confirmed on Friday that Mason Mount 's injury against Aston Villa will keep him out of the match with Man City and, rather unsurprisingly, the midfielder was not present in Chelsea's training session ahead of the clash.

Mount has been an ever-present figure in Tuchel's side so far this season, but the German coach will have to do without the 22-year-old for the visit of the champions.

Tuchel did say, however, that the Chelsea academy graduate's injury was only "minor", so he will be hopeful he will be back in action sooner rather than later.
