Edouard Mendy may be Chelsea's most important transfer but he will not solve everything

It would be a brave claim to say Edouard Mendy is the final piece of the puzzle for Chelsea before the 28-year-old makes a save for the club but there is a feeling that he can be the solution to their biggest problem.

The Senegal international is in line to make his debut away to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday evening depending on coronavirus testing protocols, ending Kepa Arrizabalaga's dismal reign as No1.

There is, of course, a chance that Mendy could be a dud - just look at the man he is replacing - but the hope is that the issue that has plagued the team since Frank Lampard became head coach will be much improved.

Edouard Mendy deal details and when he could start

According to WhoScored, 94 goalkeepers made 20 appearances or more in Europe's top five leagues last season and Mendy ranked ninth in terms of average save success (75.3%), with Kepa last (53.9%). The average among all 94 was 68.4%.

At 6ft 6in, he is far more commanding from crosses and set pieces and tends to be quite proactive - one of Kepa's significant weaknesses along with making long-range saves.

Yet last night's 6-0 win over Barnsley, with Willy Caballero between the posts, showed that familiar defensive issues persist.

It undoubtedly helps to have a solid goalkeeper, to inspire confidence in the defence in addition to keep attempts out, but until the outfield players stop giving up so many easy chances, no goalkeeper will be able to put up the sort of numbers expected from a title-winner.

Caballero made nine saves against the Sky Bet Championship team, more than Kepa in his most recent five games combined, but better teams than Barnsley will have found a way to score.

Mendy's arrival is a big positive and in relative comparison to the other summer signings expected to be the biggest upgrade in his specific position. Or that is the hope, anyway.

But, as Thiago Silva hinted earlier this week, a collective effort is required for Lampard's team to become a team capable of keeping regular clean sheets.
