Edouard Mendy could get his dream Chelsea shirt number if Marina Granovskaia seals transfer

The start of the 2020/21 Premier League season is now within touching distance.

At the time of writing, there is just eight days to go until the new season springs into life.

Chelsea will kick-off the new campaign with a trip to the Amex Stadium to face Brighton & Hove Albion, who held the Blues to a 1-1 draw in a pre-season friendly last weekend.

The trip to the South Coast will present Frank Lampard - the Chelsea head coach - with the chance to unleash his new summer signings, with the likes of Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, should he be deemed fit, and Timo Werner all no doubt chomping at the bit to experience the cut and thrust of the Premier League for the very first time.

The ultimate lowdown on Edouard Mendy

And they look set to be joined by Bayer Leverkusen ace Kai Havertz, with the midfielder now edging closer and closer towards finalising his move to Stamford Bridge.

Should Chelsea get the deal over the line without any late snags or hitches, Lampard's jigsaw will almost be complete, with just a new goalkeeper remaining on his to-do list.

The Blues have been heavily linked with a whole host of different shot-stoppers in recent months, including Manchester United's Dean Henderson, Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana and Lille 'keeper Mike Maignan.

Now, though, the Blues appear to have their sights set on an alternative target: Edouard Mendy of Rennes.

The Senegal 'keeper has emerged as a potential candidate to push Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No.1 spot at Stamford Bridge, with him appearing to be a considerably cheaper option than the likes of Oblak and Onana.

Should Chelsea, who according to the latest reports have officially opened talks with Rennes about a deal, be able to sign Mendy before the closure of next month's transfer window, the goalkeeper could land his favourite shirt number.

The 28-year-old, formerly of Stade Reims, has worn shirt No.16 for the majority of his career, meaning he could continue that trend if he sealed a move to West London.

Currently, Chelsea have not yet officially announced their squad numbers for the upcoming campaign, meaning 16 is currently vacant.

Brazilian winger Kenedy was the last man to wear it but he spent last season on loan at Spanish outfit Getafe, meaning he could be moved on this summer, either on loan once again or on a permanent basis.

Mendy has worn No.16 at all three of the clubs he has played for during his career, suggesting that the number may signify something important to him.
