Taking cognisance of a tweet by BJP social media in-charge Amit Malviya against senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, the Editors Guild of India in a statement on Saturday questioned the party’s commitment towards healthy “debate and dissent”.

It also asked the BJP to strongly caution Mr. Malviya for his tweet.

In his tweet, Mr. Malviya had held a social media poll on Mr. Sardesai seeking to discredit him, which the Guild called a “deplorable act”.

“The poll on Twitter was not only tasteless it also questioned the integrity and patriotism of Mr. Sardesai, who is a journalist of standing and a former president of Editor’s Guild of India,” it said.

The Guild demanded that Mr. Malviya immediately withdraw the tweet.

“The Twitter poll by a national head of the BJP also raises questions on the party’s commitment to healthy debate and dissent without allowing disagreement to degenerate into abuse,” the statement read.
