Editorial: What, meme worry? MAD magazine's demise brought down by a pop culture even snappier and coarser

When you think about it, it's amazing MAD Magazine, the go-to read for smart-ass teenagers (but we repeat ourselves) lasted this long.

Take all the usual pressures on a print publication in an age of apps and social media. Add to it the audience MAD aimed at _ boys likelier to spend a fortnight playing Fortnite than a lazy Saturday thumbing through pages full of cartoons and jokes.

Layer on top of it all a culture that's grown so crass and so sarcastic so fast, with pop culture memes evolving on a weekly if not daily basis, it makes a onetime almost-dangerous manual of irreverence feel approximately as square as the (actual) Book of Mormon.

In the end, MAD couldn't get even.

Maybe now, Alfred E. Neuman will get that gap in his teeth fixed. It's 2019; if you want to be an influencer, you can't look like that.
