In pursuit of "geographic balance" and the desire to "become financially independent," and to raise their son their way and to launch a new charitable entity, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back from the House of Windsor and committing to split time between the United Kingdom and North America.
We admire Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for breaking out of what clearly can be a rigid royal mold; they've both shown a healthy penchant for making waves in and around a rather stolid palace, he by serving two tours in Afghanistan, she by breaking royal protocol and engaging more directly with regular folk around the world. Truth be told, we small-r republicans don't have very much use for the royal family, particularly not for the $100 million annual sovereign grant footed by the British taxpayer.
But we do have one little question about that supposed hunger for that financial independence: Will Harry and Meghan's new charitable entity rely not one pound on the $88 billion fortune, most of which is derived from inherited lands and investments?
Meghan made more than a little money as a working actor. Is Harry now going to get a job behind a desk?
