Editorial: New Yorkers step up to help the needy

For the last three months, thousands of New Yorkers have answered the call of the Daily News' 36th annual food drive, donating more than a million pounds of food. We thank you; your hungry neighbors thank you more.

Sustenance has been dropped off at hundreds of police stations and firehouses and schools and workplaces. Our friends at City Harvest then collected and distributed the goods to pantries, soup kitchens and community food programs across all five boroughs.

It's the largest food drive in America's largest city.

The ranks of food-insecure New Yorkers remains a persistent problem even as unemployment has fallen and other economic indicators have perked up. And the need just got larger still, with federal employees suffering during the ongoing government shutdown scrambling to make ends meet.

The food drive ends today, but the generosity can continue. Fingers crossed, maybe selfish politicians will even catch the spirit.
