EDITORIAL: New York values?

Jan. 15--Ted Cruz of Texas probably thought he had a can't-miss line to win voters in New Hampshire and Iowa: "Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values," Cruz said in a radio interview.

Because everybody hates New York, right? Take that, Mr. Trump.

Ah, but there was Brooklyn-born moderator Maria Bartiromo at Thursday's debate in South Carolina, telling Cruz she didn't know what he meant.

Cruz didn't see what was coming. He doubled down. "Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro- gay-marriage, focus around money and the media," he said.

Now, imagine one of those six-second Vines, of a taxi barreling down Fifth Avenue and sideswiping Cruz. Over and over and over.

Trump nailed Cruz at the debate, saying his comments were an insult to everyone in New York who endured the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11: "When the World Trade Center came down, I saw something that no place on Earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York."

The New Yorker said Trump's retort was his best moment in any debate and "perhaps the only thing he has said in the entire campaign that is worth quoting at length."

The front page of the Daily News had the Statue of Liberty giving Cruz a rude gesture. Yes, Lady Liberty flipping Cruz the bird.

Daily News columnist Mike Lupica wrote: "The best of this city is the best of this country, and always has been. When it was hit in a way that no American city had ever been hit, it came together and rose up together in a moment as thrilling as any America had ever seen."

Cruz just came off as an actor playing off, off, off, way off Broadway.
