More than two decades into its streak as the safest big city in America, New York is still setting eye-opening safety records. The NYPD declared this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday shooting-incident-free _ the first such moment ever since statistics began more than a quarter century ago.
Meanwhile, serious crimes in New York are down year-to-date _ including robberies, felony assaults and burglaries.
There's one disconcerting blip: Even as shootings are down 5 percent citywide, murder is up 7 percent. Retaliatory gang activity remains a problem.
But it's one that the NYPD knows how to confront _ using precision tools like the gang database instead of a rights-violating blunt instrument like stop-and-frisk.
President Trump, take note.
