Editorial: An apparent attempted attack on donor George Soros shows danger of Trump's inflammatory rhetoric

If powerful people attack a man as an enemy of America long enough, is it any surprise when he winds up in the crosshairs of crazies?

Monday night, an explosive device was found in the home mailbox of billionaire donor George Soros, a regular target of right-wing conspiracy theories laced with anti-Semitic hate.

Case in point: Close Trump ally Rep. Matt Gaetz recently tweeted: "Footage in Honduras giving cash 2 women & children 2 join the caravan & storm the US border @ election time. Soros? ... Time to investigate the source!" with accompanying video showing migrants receiving "money."

There was, of course, no evidence of a Soros connection _ or even that it was money the migrants were receiving. No matter, Trump shared it with his 55 million followers.

Earlier this year, Roseanne Barr tweeted a lie that Soros, a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor, was a Nazi collaborator. Don Trump Jr. retweeted that one.

Neither the left nor the right has a monopoly on unhinged individuals with a penchant for violence. But only one party is led by a man who amplifies incendiary rhetoric.
