Edinson Cavani withdraws from Manchester United squad to face AC Milan

Edinson Cavani has withdrawn from the Manchester United squad travelling to Milan for the Europa League last-16 second leg tie.

The 34-year-old was named in United’s 21-man squad earlier on Wednesday, but he has suffered a reaction to a recent injury during today’s session and has pulled out of the squad.

Cavani will now have missed seven of United’s last eight games as he battles fitness issues that are stalling the momentum of his first season at Old Trafford.

“Unfortunately, it looks like Edinson has got a bit of a reaction to training today and didn’t feel ready to travel,” Solskjaer told MUTV before departing for Milan.

United face AC Milan at the San Siro with the tie delicately poised at 1-1 following last week’s first leg at Old Trafford.

While David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek being back in the squad boosts Solskjaer’s options against the side sitting second in Serie A, Cavani’s withdrawal has reduced his possibilities in attack.

Anthony Martial hasn’t made the trip, which leaves Amad, Daniel James, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford as the likely candidates to play in the front four.

Cavani’s father recently cast doubt on whether the Uruguayan would stay at Old Trafford for a second season. His current deal expires in June and United have the option to extend it, but there remains uncertainty over whether he will remain at the club.
