Edinson Cavani will wear the number 7 shirt for Manchester United if he comes off the bench against Wolves.
Amid the impending return of Cristiano Ronaldo - after his sensational transfer U-turn on Friday afternoon - there has been widespread debate as to which player will have the coveted jersey this term.
Cavani was, of course, the number 7 at Old Trafford and beyond last season and the Uruguayan decided to extend his stay in the UK for another 12 months this summer.
With that, it was widely expected that he would don the same squad number, once again - especially having held off competition from England forward Jadon Sancho in that regard.
However, the marquee arrival of Ronaldo and the immense marketing potential that comes with that has ignited a different argument altogether for United figures.
As per Premier League rules, it was initially thought that, in any case, Ronaldo would NOT be granted his preferred choice on the basis 7 had already been assigned to Cavani.
A loophole emerged in that regard, though, because the club could ask the Premier League for special dispensation. That could still happen but he is still wearing the number vs Wolves.
Cavani was granted additional leave time on the back of his Copa America exploits and, this afternoon, the forward returns to the United squad for first time.
Included on the bench as Sancho and Raphael Varane make their first starts for the club, his name has been printed next to the number 7.
