Edinson Cavani sends penalty message to Manchester United after Uruguay goal

Manchester United's players have suffered mixed fortunes so far at Euro 2020, but Edinson Cavani is keeping his Uruguay side's chances alive in the other continental competition taking place across the globe.

Cavani played his fourth game of the Copa America on Monday and scored his second goal. Uruguay took on Paraguay in their final group-match two points behind their opponents, needing a win to secure qualification into the knock-out rounds of the competition.

The game was a tense and nervy with Uruguay piling on the pressure.

The pivotal moment of the match came when the Uruguayans were awarded a penalty for a foul on Nahitan Nandez in the 21st minute.

Cavani stepped up to take the spot-kick and slotted the ball emphatically into the back of the net.

It could be that Cavani has put himself in the frame to take some United penalties in the future — although Bruno Fernandes is the regular taker, and Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have also taken them with success.

Uruguay will now take on Colombia in the quarter finals of the competition after finishing second in Group A just three points behind Argentina who defeated them earlier on in the competition.

Should Cavani advance to the semi-finals, Uruguay are expected to face Argentina again who need to beat Ecuador in order to advance from the quarter finals.

Cavani has started every game for Uruguay so far with the United forward preferred ahead of Luis Suarez in the pecking order in last night's game. The ex Liverpool man replaced him as a substitute for the final 22 minutes.

The Copa America is set to finish on July 10th. After that Cavani will have a few weeks to recharge his batteries before he needs to report to Carrington.
