Edinson Cavani 'advised by Uruguay manager' over Manchester United future

Edinson Cavani has reportedly been told by Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez to stay at Manchester United this summer.

The veteran striker is out of contract at United at the end of the season and, after his display against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, the club are keen to keep him.

Yet doubts remain over whether the 34-year-old will agree to stay at Old Trafford, with his father previously outlining Cavani's intention to leave in the summer.

MEN Sport has also previously revealed that Cavani has declared himself unavailable for some games despite being cleared to play by medical staff at the club.

Boca Juniors have been heavily linked with signing Cavani on a free transfer in the summer but reports in Argentina say the club have suffered a blow in their hopes of landing the former PSG star.

Depo report that Cavani has consulted Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez over his future, with the coach arguing it would make sense for the striker to stay in Europe until next year's World Cup at the very least.

Tabarez's stance is in contrast to his assistant manager, Mario Rebollo, who said recently it would make sense for Cavani to go to Boca if that is where he is most comfortable.

Speaking to 2 De Punta, Rebollo says it would be a boost to have Cavani return to South America, provided that is what he wants to do.

He said: "It helps the national team if Cavani goes to Boca or wherever.

"The priority is that he plays where he is comfortable and with a good competitive level. If he's close to here it'd be great, but if he's not comfortable he would not bear it much.

"It would be good for us if Cavani plays where he feels most comfortable. It makes no difference to me if it's Boca or another place, where he's better. We have to have him with rhythm and competition."
