Edinburgh zookeepers thrilled as the park reopens to the public after lockdown

After weeks of lockdown, Edinburgh Zoo has finally been able to reopen its doors to the public today.

The zoo and other wildlife parks such as Blair Drummond Safari Park and the Five Sisters Zoo were given the green light by the Scottish Government to begin allowing customers back into the parks from June 29.

In recent weeks, the zoo had expressed serious concerns over their financial stability and future after rising costs and no income created issues for the wildlife park.

Now however, the sites have been allowed to reopen as long as strict social distancing and hygiene measures are adhered to.

New features such as sanitising stations, a one way system and perspex screens will be introduced to ensure staff and visitor safety, reports the Daily Record.

Popular events at the zoo such as the penguin parade have also been suspended until further notice alongside talks from the zookeepers.

To ensure extra safety visitors can also. buy £5 ‘Go Safe packs’ on entry which come with a disposable face mask, a pack of tissues and a mini 60ml hand sanitiser.

Today, staff at the zoo took to social media to share their joy at finally being able to get back to doing the jobs they love, as well as letting the public visit a host of exotic animals from around the world.

In a post, they stated:

“We are so excited to start welcoming you back to the zoo.

"With lots of safety measures in place, your visit will feel different to normal, but we hope just as much fun."
