Edinburgh Zoo shares picture of adorable koala joey caught on camera for first time

An adorable six-month old koala joey has been caught on camera for the first time.

The tiny creature - native to Australia - can be seen peeking out of its mother's pouch for the first time at Edinburgh Zoo, where it was born.

Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity were delighted to capture a glimpse of the young marsupial, who was born to first time mum Kalari and dad Tanami on June 26.

It will take a few months for the joey to grow big enough to move from the pouch onto Kalari's back, when visitors can expect to see it.

The joey should be fully independent in 12 months and will be weighed, sexed and named in the coming months.

Koalas are currently listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) red list - with the main threats being habitat loss, wildfires and climate change.

Edinburgh Zoo is home to the UK's only Queensland koalas.
