Scots zookeepers have caught a tiny baby monkey on camera for the first time after it was born one-month ago.
The L ’Hoest’s infant came into the world at Edinburgh Zoo while the popular visitor destination was closed due to the pandemic.
After being born to mum Sheli and dad Jamal, the youngster is due to be named in the coming weeks once staff are able to determine its sex.
The species originates in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has a distinctive white beard with a dark coat.
Jennifer Appleyard, animal keeper at Edinburgh Zoo, said, “Our baby L’Hoest’s monkey was born in May and has been clinging to mum Sheli so we’re not sure yet whether we have a new little boy or girl.
“Once we know, hopefully in the coming weeks, we’ll name the youngster.
“Sheli is a first-time mum and has been very protective of her newborn, but she has taken to motherhood like a duck to water and seems to love it.
“We’re all really excited about our new addition and we’re so glad to be able to welcome visitors back to meet our new arrival too.”
While the zoo reopened on Monday 29 June, it is still an incredibly difficult time for the charity.
