Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group on brink of collapse putting 24,000 jobs at risk

High Street fashion giant Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group, which owns the Peacocks and Jaeger brands, is on the brink of collapse after it filed a notice to appoint administrators, affecting around 24,000 workers.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill was founded by Drew Stevenson in 1946 as the Langholm Dyeing and Finishing Company. Its first shop opened in Edinburgh in 1970.

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill (Group) Ltd (EWM Group) is now the holding company for three core brands: Edinburgh Woollen Mill,Jane NormanandPeacocks.

The group operates close to 1,000 stores in the UK including:

  • 265 Edinburgh Woollen Mill stores

  • 479 Peacocks stores

  • 107 Ponden Home stores

  • 88 tourist shops and visitor centres trading under various fascias(e.g. James Pringle Weavers)

  • 27 destination sites combining all the Group's concepts

It also operates a number of tourist attractions, including the Scottish Deer Centre inFifeand the Scottish Wool Centre inPerthshire.

Earlier this week, Greene King became the latest company to announce major job cuts, as the 10pm curfew hit the pub chain.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, Manchester Airport Group warned that 892 jobs could be cut across three UK airports.

The losses add to the more than 210,000 tracked by the PA news agency since the start of lockdown in March.
