Edinburgh woman rushed to hospital after unprovoked daylight attack by group

A woman has been hospitalised following allegations of an unprovoked racist attack in the Newington area of the Capital.

The 26-year-old received treatment after being accosted in the street by a group of thugs who are said to have hauled her to the floor by her hair on St Patrick Street.

Yobs hurled racial epithets at the victim, understood to be of East Asian descent, before carrying out the vile attack in broad daylight.

It comes just months after police launched an investigation into a hate crime outside the University of Edinburgh library in which a 17-year-old was assaulted by a group of young men and women.

Officers told the Edinburgh Evening News they are keeping an “open mind” about the attack, but have launched an appeal for information and have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a woman assaulted on St Patrick Street in Edinburgh around 6.40pm on Friday, 30 April.

"The 26-year-old woman was taken to hospital for treatment following the incident.

"Enquiries are ongoing and officers will keep an open mind about any motives behind the incident.”

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101, quoting incident 2991 of 30 April.
