Edinburgh woman cyclist tells of 'attempted ambush' by three men in tunnel

A woman has taken to social media to warn other pedestrians after she was nearly “ambushed” by three men in the early hours of the morning.

Cara Mckinley, 28, told how was cycling along the converted railway track at around 6am this morning when three men wearing tracksuits appeared to be waiting for pedestrians.

One man was waiting at the end of the tunnel and let the her pass before getting on his phone - while another man was waiting on a bike at the mouth of the tunnel, also on his phone, she said.

Cara told how the second man started cycling towards her so she sped up to get away and then saw the third person at the mouth of the tunnel “hiding behind a bush.”

Cara has since reported the incident to the police but decided to post her ordeal on social media to warn others about the route.

When asked about the experience, she said:

“It made me feel like others would be in danger as it was a clear attempt to ambush someone in the tunnel. I will not change routes because it should not be the job of the victims to change in order for safety to happen.

“To make it safer, police need to actually respond promptly to reports of this manner when they are called in. I passed by again at 8:30 am today and saw no sign that the police ever followed up on the call and I have no contact with them either.”
