Edinburgh woman admits knife attack on police forced to subdue her with chemical spray

A woman in Edinburgh has admitted a knife attack on Police Scotland offers who were forced to subdue her with PAVA spray.

The incident took place in the Nicola Rodger's kitchen after cops were called to reports of concern for her welfare.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard the woman was “agitated” and “almost incoherent” state when she called police, who then forced entry to her home.

The 27-year-old admitted the assault on officers on June 3, where she held a knife and made "stabbing motions" towards the officers, the Daily Record reported.

The police officers, constables Ryan Simpson and Agnieszka Gloc-Birecka, were forced to spray the woman with a chemical spray - PAVA.

One officers cut his hand while disarming her. A witness told police the woman had been drinking heavily.

Prosecutor Lynsay Magro said officers heard shouting on arrival but there was no answer at the door.

She told the court: “Due to their concern about her welfare, they forced entry.

“The accused was visibly intoxicated and was screaming and shouting at the officers.

“The accused reached into the kitchen sink and pulled out the knife.”

The prosecutor added that the officers were in “close proximity” as Rodgers made “multiple stabbing motions with the knife”.

The court heard the knife only "narrowly" missed the officers on each occasion, before PC Simpson used his PAVA spray on Rodgers.

Rodger's defence solicitor said she had limited recollection of the incident.

Margo added that PC Simpson "prised the knife from the grasp of the accused" after she was pulled to floor, sustaining a minor cut in the process.
