Edinburgh Wetherspoons plan to transform derelict site into huge new beer garden

An Edinburgh Wetherspoons could see a huge new beer garden takeover a derelict building if plans are approved.

The huge UK pub chain have a number of different sites in the capital, but are looking to give one of their locations a new lease of life with a gigantic expansion.

The Foot of the Walk venue in Leith has been marked by the company for a makeover, with plans hoping to build a brand new outdoor area next door.

Proposals submitted to the council have detailed that the site on 15 Duke Street would be adapted from an abandoned building into an open area, with the original walls still maintained.

The roof however would be completely open, with customers able to enjoy a few drinks in what would be a sun-trap on the rare days that there is sunshine on Leith.

Computer generated mock-ups of the new area have shown that a new doorway would be created in the original Foot of the Walk wall to allow for access into the beer garden next door.

Design pictures have also shown the site is expected to have a very modern and European feel, with open booths, beams and a selection of high and low seating.

The derelict building itself will also undergo a bit of a makeover, with structural repairs to be carried out as well as a number of different interior and aesthetic works.

Explaining the plans, JD Wetherspoons wrote: "The proposals retail the external walls and remove the roof.

"The customer area will be accessed via the existing public house, and will be confined to the footprint of the existing building only, with its adjacent yard area being landscaped."
