Analysis

Christine Jardine is the current MP (Wikimedia)

This constituency will see a tightly-fought battle between the Liberal Democrats and the SNP.

Christine Jardine won the seat for the Lib Dems in 2017. She has a majority of around 3000 votes meaning it's a fairly close race by UK standards. A swing of just under 3% would be enough for the SNP's Sarah Masson to win.

The Conservatives did reasonably well in Edinburgh West at the last election, but would need a swing of over 6% to win this time. Scottish Labour trailed with just under 15% of the vote.

Many Scottish seats saw MPs elected on smaller majorities in 2017, which some have attributed to tactical voting.

Edinburgh West includes parts of the city such as Cramond, Corstorphine and South Queensferry.

Issues

Like many parts of Edinburgh, the west of the city voted strongly to remain in the EU during the Brexit referendum.

It voted 65% No in the 2014 referendum on Scottish independence, indicating strong support for the union.

Proposals to change the flight paths around Edinburgh Airport have caused some concern in the area.

The Queensferry Crossing opened in 2017, providing a new link over the Forth.

Incomes in Edinburgh West are slightly higher than the UK average and unemployment is slightly lower.
