Edinburgh weather: Yellow warning issued as heavy downpours prompt flood alert

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians following a mini heatwave.

The Met Office has issued the news nobody wanted to hear in the middle of June as the capital is set to be hit with heavy downpours for the rest of the weekend and into Monday, June 19.

A yellow warning is currently in place as of 7pm on Sunday, June 18, until midnight, with a further warning issued for Monday until midday. This comes after forecasters predicated 'thundery downpours' for the capital next week.

According to the Met Office, heavy rain moving northwards on Sunday evening may bring some disruption. Locals in Edinburgh and the Lothians, during the time the warning is in place, can expect spray, flooding, difficult driving conditions, delays and cancellations to public transport and a small chance of businesses and communities being affected.

SEPA has also issued a flood warning for Edinburgh and the Lothians due to the projected downpours, saying: "A flood alert has been issued for Edinburgh and Lothians.

"A period of heavy rain from Sunday evening into Monday morning could cause flooding impacts from surface water. Particularly at risk are urban areas and the transport network. Impacts could include flooding to low-lying land and roads, with difficult driving conditions. Some property flooding is possible."

The forecast for Sunday evening, according to the Met Office, reads: "Some evening brightness and the odd shower. Soon becoming cloudy with rain arriving from the south, this turning heavy and possibly thundery at times. Minimum temperature 14 °C.

Ahead of Monday's rain, they add: "A wet start with some rain, heavy at times. Drier and brighter conditions arriving by the afternoon but scattered heavy showers developing. Maximum temperature 22C."
