Edinburgh weather: Yellow warning for snow as temperatures set to drop as low as -11C

Temperatures are set to plummet this week as the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning for snow.

Edinburgh city centre is just outside the warning area for snow and ice, which covers much of Midlothian.

Issued by the Met Office this morning, forecasters say snow showers and icy stretches are likely to bring some travel disruption Wednesday evening into Thursday.

Penicuik and the surrounding areas are all in the centre of the affected area.

Scots have been told snow could hit anywhere in Scotland this week, particularly in Edinburgh and the highlands, as the mercury is set to drop as a low as -11C.

Leon Brown from the Weather Company explained: “18 to 24 days which have snow or ice and transport issues are expected in Scotland this winter.

“Early winter cold means disruption in December being higher than recent years. Below -10C is likely in January in Scotland.”

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "Once we get into Wednesday afternoon it'll be much colder with showers turning wintery.

"It'll feel pretty cold for the rest of the week and into the weekend with an increasing risk of wintry showers in the hills but also low lying areas.

"There may be some snow accumulating in the hills but also a risk of it settling in the lowlands."

It comes after we reported an analysis of forecasts predicted a 25 per cent chance of heavy snow in the city by Friday.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Winter is arriving with a bang. Don't forget cold weather car checks and slow down in wintry conditions.”
