Edinburgh weather: What the Met Office is saying about reports of a September heatwave

If the August weather has disappointed you here in Edinburgh - the obvious answer being 'where has the sun been all month?' - there may be some good news for us summer-seeking Scots.

Forecasters have predicted a warmer end to August and a September heatwave arriving in some parts of the UK - but will we feel the warmth here in Edinburgh?

According to weather forecasters at both the BBC and Met Office, the streak of largely wet and cloudy weather switches to sunshine on Wednesday, August 25.

On Wednesday (August 25) the capital is predicted to bask in 21-degree summer sunshine, with a foggy morning set to clear up by 1 pm bringing blue skies and sunshine until 7 pm that evening.

But will the good weather continue?

Here's what the Met Office, BBC weather and Accuweather say about a September heatwave in Edinburgh

Met Office

Let's start with some good news, the Met Office reports that September will give us 'temperatures that are likely to be above average for the time of the year'.

Although it's meant to be hot on Wednesday, the Met Office also reports that 'the last weekend in August and into September is likely to be dominated by high pressure resulting in fine and settled weather across the UK.'

However towards the end of September, they predict 'changeable conditions with periods of showers and longer spells of rain, interspersed with drier spells at time.'

BBC Weather

The last weekend of August looks like its set to be a warm one, with both Saturday and Sunday expected to bring in highs of 18 degrees with sunny intervals.

Fortunately for us 9-5ers, the following weekend (Saturday 4 September and Sunday 5 September) looks set to continue the trend with both days predicted to have highs of 17 degrees and remain dry.

In between these sunny weekends, Edinburgh locals can expect temperatures of 17-19 degrees but with heavy cloud and atmosphere.

Accuweather

Accuweather reports that this weekend (August 28 and 29) will be even warmer than what BBC Weather predicts - with the weather site predicting highs of a scorching 20 degrees (we can say scorching because it is Scotland after all)

Friday 3 September is already expected to have 'thick and heavy cloud cover', in line with both BBC Weather and the Met Office's predictions for a 'heavy atmosphere'.

Accuweather provides a longer forecast period than both the other weather sites, and a quick scroll on it confirms that temperatures in September will stay at around 17-19 degrees for the majority of the month.
