Edinburgh weather warning: 'Very strong winds' forecast with Met Office alert in place

"Very strong winds" are set to batter Edinburgh and the Lothians on Tuesday with a Met Office weather warning currently in place.

The Forth Road Bridge has already been closed to high-sided vehicles and double-decker buses due to the conditions. Two HGVs were also blown over on the A1 in East Lothian leading to a closure of the road.

Forecasters say further disruption is expected throughout the day, with delays to road, rail and air travel possible. They add there's even a chance of short term power loss in some areas.

Gusts of up to 61mph are expected this morning with the worst of the weather to hit around 10am. Should winds exceed 65 mph the Forth Road Bridge would close to all traffic. Restrictions may also be brought in on the Queensferry Crossing.

The yellow weather warning came into force at 5am and will continue until 5pm. While Edinburgh is set to miss the worst of the wet weather, warnings for heavy rain are in-place in West Lothian.

According to the Met Office this could cause flooding to homes, businesses and roads – causing significant disruption throughout the area. The wet weather warning will remain until 3pm. Edinburgh Live reported on Monday how a storm was expected to hit parts of West Lothian.
