Edinburgh weather: Travel chaos as Forth Bridge closes and trams suspended due to high winds

Edinburgh and the Lothians are experiencing travel chaos today caused by high winds of up to 60 miles per hour.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind which came into place at 2am this morning and remain in place until at least 6pm tonight.

Heavy gusts are already causing trouble for the Lothians, with all Edinburgh trams suspended and the Forth Road Bridge now closed to high-sided vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists, and pedestrians due to the high winds.

There is also trouble on the railways as Transpennine Express say they have suspended trains between Edinburgh and Carlisle due to the severe weather conditions.

Bear Scotland updated on how the weather is affecting the Forth Road Bridge penning: "The #A9000 Forth Road Bridge is currently CLOSED to high sided vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians due to high winds gusting up to 60mph. The #M90 Queensferry Crossing remains OPEN to all motorway traffic, thanks to its wind shielding. Please drive carefully."

While Edinburgh Trams announced: "Due to weather disruption, all services are currently suspended. Ticket acceptance is in place with @on_lothianbuses #edintravel."

Here is what the Met Office is warning to expect for the rest of today:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
