Edinburgh weather this weekend: Freezing conditions expected with temperatures to plummet

Temperatures are set to plummet in Edinburgh this weekend with freezing conditions expected for large periods.

According to forecasters at the Met Office things could feel as cold as -4C at 9am on Saturday morning, with temperatures likely to hover around freezing for much of the day.

Prior to a bright and sunny New Year's Day Edinburgh had been hit with heavy snow and rain, with conditions less than ideal on a number of driving and walking routes.

While things aren't expected to be quite so troublesome over Saturday and Sunday, some ice could form.

Saturday is forecast to start off cloudy with some sunshine and temperatures around zero, but feeling like minus three or four for much of the morning.

There are likely to be highs of 2C in the afternoon, but it's not expected to be any better than that before things plunge to around freezing again from 6pm.

On Sunday it's not expected to be quite so cold, although rain showers are predicted to arrive.

The day should start with temperatures around 2C or 3C, but feeling like minus 1, and cloudy.

There's a high chance of rain from around midday and this is forecast to continue throughout the rest of the day – so if you're planning a walk to start off 2021 you're maybe best doing it before Sunday.

For up to the minute weather updates check out the Met Office.
