Edinburgh weather: Temperatures to plunge below freezing on Christmas Eve

If you're heading out to do some last minute shopping then you will want to wrap up because the weather is going to take an even chillier turn in the captial.

Bookmakers were confident that Edinburgh was even "likely" to see snowfall this Christmas, slashing the odds to just 2-1 last week, with forecasters warning of "unsettled conditions".

Looking at the weather in the days to come, the city isn't likely to be waking up to snow but temperatures are set to plunge below freezing.

According to BBC weather reports, temperatures will drop below zero today, while the mercury will reach lows of minus two on Christmas Eve, with the temperature climbing to just three degrees at its warmest.

It comes as the Met Office has issued yellow warnings in parts of Scotland, including Aberdeen and Inverness, for snow and ice across Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The warning said: "Showers across northern Scotland will turn more persistent from late (Wednesday) evening, with snow occasionally falling to low levels through the night.

“This will result in widespread icy patches on untreated surfaces, and up to 1 cm of snow below 100 metres away from the coasts, with 2 to 3 cm between 200 and 300 metres.

“Showers will turn less frequent after dawn on Christmas Eve.”
