Edinburgh weather: Sunny spells forecast as Lothians avoid worst of Storm Barbara

Edinburgh is to avoid the worst of a storm set to bring rain and heavy wind to some of parts of the UK.

Flood alerts are in place covering some parts of the Scotland, but forecasters predict Edinburgh and the Lothians will miss the worst of the bad weather.

The city will stay dry in the main with some sunny spells predicted in the early afternoon for the Lothian region.

There is a chance of some showers from mid-day, when temperatures will also reach a maximum of 12C.

It follows a wet start to the week, which the Met Office warned in advance would be "turbulent" .

October has already seen record breaking levels of rainfall in the first half of the month.

Saturday 3 October was the wettest day in the record books dating back to 1891, the Met Office said.
