Edinburgh Weather: Storm Aiden set to batter Scotland with heavy winds and rain

Scotland is gearing up for the approach of Storm Aiden and the Met Office has warned that Edinburgh could be hit by 'heavy rain and gales force winds. '

The start of the week will see a period of 'calm before the storm' as Edinburgh can expect 'breezy weather with rain at times' from Monday to Thursday, according to the Met Office.

But from Friday onwards, the storm is set to hit, with the Edinburgh and Lothians forecast warning of "potentially severe" winds and "significant rainfall."

The Met Office report for Edinburgh from 2 October to 11 October, reads: "An unsettled period, with plenty of showers and some occasional longer spells of rain across much of the country, the heaviest and most widespread areas likely in the west or northwest, and only limited drier interludes.

"Often windy, with a risk of gales at times (potentially severe), particularly around coastal regions and within areas of more significant rainfall.

"With time, northern parts of the UK may tend to become drier and more settled overall, with low pressure systems tending to track further south.

"Feeling cold, especially so where there is persistent rain and strong winds.

"Frost is possible at night in any calmer period, becoming increasingly likely for the northern half of the UK later in this period."

Vicky Mitchell of the Met Office said: “There is too much uncertainty at the moment to say for sure what will happen by the end of the week.

“We are tracking three low pressure systems. If one deepens sufficiently, it will probably produce a named storm.

“Whatever happens, we can be sure of wet and windy conditions going into next weekend.

“We can’t rule out winds of 70mph but it’s anything but certain at the moment.”
