Edinburgh weather: Scotrail to do 'controlled shutdown' of train network from 7pm due to flood risk

Scotrail have taken the unusual step of doing a controlled shutdown of the rail network in flood-affected areas from 7pm this evening (3 October) due to an amber weather warning for heavy rain and flooding that will affect travel plans.

The British Transport Police said: "Following a @metoffice Amber Weather Warning for the east and north of Scotland, the Scottish rail network will reduce the frequency of services running in these areas from late afternoon, with a controlled shut down of the network around 19:00 tonight." The Edinburgh-Glasgow line is one of those that will shut down.

Earlier today it was announced that trains would face speed restrictions due to the severe weather, with trains in parts of Scotland slowed to 40mph on Saturday.

Now, it's been decided that many services in affected areas will cease at around 7pm.

The last trains between Edinburgh and Glasgow are as follows:

Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Falkirk High. Last trains depart Glasgow & Edinburgh at 18:45. Glasgow Queen Street – Edinburgh via Cumbernauld. Last trains depart Edinburgh at 18:34 & Glasgow at 18:55.

Strong winds and heavy rain have prompted weather warnings for parts of the east of Scotland including Edinburgh and the Lothians.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place for Edinburgh, East Lothian, parts of West Lothian and Fife - whilst Tayside is facing a more serious amber alert.
