Edinburgh weather: ScotRail services delayed as heavy rain moves in to Lothians

ScotRail services have been delayed in Midlothian as heavy rain moves into Edinburgh and the Lothians.

The travel operator confirmed around 8.15pm on Monday that services were forced to run slower than usual due to "very heavy rain".

In a tweet, they said: "There's delays of up to about 15mins between Gorebridge and Stow because of an earlier speed restriction that had to be imposed following very heavy rain."

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency also warned of flooding in the area due to heavy rain this evening.

They said shortly before 8pm: "Heavy showers this evening in Edinburgh and Lothians could cause surface water flooding and potential travel disruption, with more rain expected tomorrow."

While rain has hit some parts, large sections of the city remain dry with showers scheduled to move in later on Monday evening, or on Tuesday morning.

A Met Office weather warning for thunderstorms will be in place from midday to midnight on Tuesday with "thundery showers" possibly leading to flooding and transport disruption.

Forecasters say "flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds".

They add "some communities might become cut off if roads flood".

The City of Edinburgh Council say their gullies team is on standby to respond to any surface water which could result from the stormy weather.
