Edinburgh weather: Scotland snow alert as Met Office shares date of first flurries

Scotland has been told to expect possible snow showers as the mercury plunges across the country.

Forecasters have told those on higher ground might be in for flurries as the first white stuff of winter is predicted.

Temperatures are expected to fluctuate in Edinburgh for the rest of October as autumn takes hold.

Then potential snowfall could be seen "as October moves into November" - making the end of the month the far most likely date.

Met Office senior meteorologist Greg Dewhurst told The Sun : “We’re likely to see some snowy weather in higher parts as October moves into November.

“Likely areas to be affected are the Scottish mountains as well as higher ground in northern England and northern Wales.

“Low areas are unlikely to see any.

“It’s quite normal for this time of year.”

In terms of this weekend, the capital can expect a cloudy day with showers today, with these merging into longer spells of rain at with a maximum temperature of 13°C.

The rain is expected to clear away this evening with dry, clear periods for a time and a minimum temperature of 6°C.

Tomorrow is expected to be cloudy at times with scattered showers, some of these turning heavy.

Looking ahead to the end of October, the Met adds: "The most likely outcome is for a north-south split, with low pressure and the wettest weather in the north and higher pressure and driest conditions in the south or southwest."
