Edinburgh weather: Princes Street shoppers left knee deep in water after flash floods

Edinburgh Princes Street shoppers have been left knee deep in water after flash floods drenched the city.

The capital's main shopping street has been battered by heavy, thunderous rain this evening.

Videos show pedestrians wading through water and cars struggling to make their journey.

On social media, one person wrote: What the... is this Scotland...? hmmm a clear sign to go to South of France me thinks?"

It comes as flash floods have caused chaos across the city with a yellow flood warning in place until midnight tonight.

One local filmed a video of the Edinburgh City Bypass being drenched with rain, warning: “Drive with caution Edinburgh city bypass flooded with severe thunder & lightning.”

SEPA has issued a warning that heavy showers could cause potentially dangerous floods, saying: “A Flood Alert has been issued for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

"Heavy showers on Saturday afternoon and Sunday could cause flooding impacts from surface water."

The added: "Particularly at risk are urban areas and the transport network

“Due to the localised nature of the showers, impacts may be isolated, with not all locations being affected.

"Remain vigilant and remember, it is your responsibility to take actions which help protect yourself and your property."

Traffic Scotland also capital urged drivers to stay vigilant, saying: “City of Edinburgh - Weather, Drivers in Edinburgh are advised to use caution due to surface water affecting driving conditions.”
