Edinburgh weather: Police cordon off busy road after chimney collapses in winds

Police cordoned off a busy road in Edinburgh as gale-force winds rip through the city amid yellow weather warnings.

Onlookers watched on as emergency services shut down part of Bruntsfield Place and Holy Corner earlier this afternoon, at around 1:30pm.

Footage from the scene showed at least two fire engines were called in to assist, while police established a cordon on the busy road.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told Edinburgh Live a chimney had collapsed on Bruntsfield Place.

Sharing a video of the scene, the resident said: "Police closing junction at Holy Corner, Fire Brigade investigating, Bruntsfield Place closed temporarily. No sign of fire, perhaps possible wind damage to roofs?"

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 1.33pm on Tuesday, February 23 to reports of a chimney collapse at Bruntsfield Place, Edinburgh."

“Operations Control mobilised two appliances to the scene where firefighters removed a chimney pot from the roof of the building.

“Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

It comes as a "danger to life" warning was issued for Edinburgh on Tuesday, with heavy rain and flooding expected to blast the city until 6pm on Wednesday. Forecasters say a spell of "persistent wet weather" is likely, and this may lead to flooding.

The blustery weather has already wreaked havoc with the city's tenements in Leith where the roof has been blown off a block of flats earlier today.

As reported by Edinburgh Live, emergency services scrambled to Iona Street shortly before 1pm after part of a roof came flying off a three-storey tenement building.

There are not thought to be any injuries although a number of vehicles are believed to have been damaged in the frightening incident.
