Edinburgh weather: 'Polar ice bomb' to hit as capital set for freezing Christmas

Edinburgh is set to see temperatures plunge as forecasters predict a 'polar ice bomb' will hit the Scotland in the run up to Christmas time.

According to reports, the low pressure coming in from the Arctic could bring plummeting temperatures and even the possibility of a white Christmas in parts of Scotland.

Christmas Eve is predicted to bring lows of -4C in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

According to the Met Office, from the 16th and 25th December Scots can expect weather to be 'unsettled with a mixture of blustery showers and brighter spells for most of the UK.'

And according to WX weather charts, the central belt could expect the freezing temperatures to bring snow on a number of days in the run up to Christmas.

According to Paddy Power Edinburgh now has a 3/1 chance of welcoming snow on Christmas day.

BBC Weather reports how Christmas Day in the capital is currently expected to be bright but frosty.

They also report that the "low pressure across the north Atlantic" is likely to bring in "wet and windy weather through the Christmas period."

They added: "We can't ignore the prospect that the massive high-pressure area over Scandinavia extends a bit further west for a time during the last 10 days of December.

"This would deflect low-pressure areas near the UK further south, down over France and Spain.

"Cold air over Scandinavia and northern Russia would then find it much easier to flow towards the UK for a few days."
