Edinburgh weather on Boxing Day: Rain set to lash down on the capital as Storm Bella hits the UK

Edinburgh and the Lothians are set to be battered by heavy rain on Boxing Day.

Much of the city woke up to a dry, but cloudy, morning although things are expected to take a turn for the worse as the day progresses. So anyone planning to walk off those festive pigs in blankets might want to factor the gloomy Met Office prediction into their plans.

Forecasters reckon we could see some showers late morning and around lunch-time, before the heavy rain comes on in the afternoon. There's an 80 per cent chance of heavy rain at 3pm and this rises to 90 per cent an hour later. These heavy showers are expected to continue right through until 9pm when things might ease off a little.

Temperatures won't be the coldest we've seen this winter, with things likely to hover around 6C or 7C for much of the day.

Large parts of the UK are set to be hit with flooding and strong gales as Storm Bella arrives. The west of Scotland is expected to be worst affected, although the outlook remains rather bleak in Edinburgh.

We'll bring you any developments on this story as we get them throughout the day.
