Edinburgh weather: More severe weather warnings as thunderstorms predicted

Edinburgh has been told to prepare for ferocious weather, as the Met Office issues yet another yellow thunderstorm warning.

The capital is expecting thundery showers and flashes of lightning during this afternoon, and well into the evening, lasting until approximately 9pm.

Although it may feel muggy and be fairly bright outdoors just now in the capital, the Met Office has warned locals not to expect the suspiciously nice weather to last.

Forecasters at the Met Office have stated, "Thundery outbursts possible ahead of more unsettled conditions which are likely to spread."

Their reasoning for the further yellow weather warning is as follows: "Heavy, slow-moving showers, some thundery, may cause travel disruption and flooding in a few places."

Despite the rain and thunderstorms today, the temperatures will remain high, reaching around 18C throughout the day.

The warning has been extended until midnight on Saturday, after beginning at 4am this morning.

Today's forecast

Cloudy start. Then some bright or sunny intervals and scattered showers, heavy and thundery at times. Feeling warm and rather humid. Southwest may turn cloudy again later. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight's forecast

Heavy showers becoming less widespread through this evening. Then the rest of the night will be mostly cloudy with occasional showers, still heavy in places. Warm and humid. Minimum temperature 14 °C.

Saturday's forecast

Staying unsettled with scattered showers, turning heavy by the afternoon. Parts of the east may stay cloudy and somewhat drier. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday

Remaining unsettled on Sunday and Monday with scattered heavy showers. Becoming largely dry on Tuesday.

SEPA have put flood alerts in force and Traffic Scotland have asked drivers who are planning to travel today to take extra care on the roads.
