Edinburgh weather: Mini heatwave with capital set to see mercury climb again this weekend

Good news if you are planning a trip outdoors today with the capital set to bathe in summer sunshine.

Temperatures in the capital will be as warm as those normally seen in the last week of June - but just in time for relaxed outdoor gathering rules.

Forecasters are predicting highs of 13C on Saturday afternoon as Scotland enjoys some rare sunshine.

Met Office weather forecaster Tom Morgan said the mini heatwave is likely to last over the weekend.

He said: ”Scotland’s run of good weather has been pretty exceptional for the time of year.

“On Saturday, we are forecasting that somewhere in eastern Scotland, possibly in Dundee or Angus, the mercury will top 18C.

“Looking at our charts, you see that that is the same temperature Edinburgh could expect in the last week of June.

“That will feel very pleasant for anyone lucky enough to be living in that part of Scotland.”

The 2021 UK high of 19C was recorded at the capital’s Botanic Gardens on Thursday, before some darker skies on Friday saw temperatures cool a little in the east.

There could be a chance of some cloud, but the warmest temperatures are expected from around mid day on Saturday before things start to cool down again at 6pm.

Heading into Sunday slightly more cloud is expected throughout the day with the chance of some sunny spells.

The Met Office said: "A dry and bright day with occasional sunny spells. After a chilly start it will feel pleasant in any sunshine, although temperatures down on Saturday's highs. Light winds.

"Maximum temperature 12C."
