Edinburgh weather: Met Office upgrade capital thunderstorm warning to amber

Edinburgh’s thunderstorm warning has now been upgraded to an amber alert by the Met Office.

The capital now has two severe weather warnings in place, with the city to be battered by heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and possible flash flooding.

The Amber thunderstorm warning is now in place across Edinburgh from 12:00 pm today until 10 pm tonight. (July 27).

A yellow weather warning for rain which could cause “damage to some buildings” is also in place from 12:00 am on Wednesday, July 28, and is expected to stay in place until Thursday (July 29).

The Met Office said: “Showers will break out widely across much of Scotland from late morning, turning heavy in the afternoon. While many places will miss the heaviest showers, where they do occur 20-40 mm could fall in an hour with locally 60-80 mm in a few hours.
