Edinburgh weather: Met Office say 'homes could flood' as they issue two yellow warnings

The Met Office has issued two severe weather warnings for Edinburgh and much of Scotland, with the capital set to be by thunderstorms and rain.

A thunderstorm warning is in place from Tuesday at 12pm (July 27) until 11.59pm, before it switches over to a yellow rain warning at midnight (July 28).

A severe rain warning will then be in place across the capital until Thursday, 29 July at 6:00 am.

Locals are being warned that severe thunderstorms on Tuesday could cause homes and businesses to flood quickly. There is also a chance of buildings being damaged by lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.

In a statement the Met Office said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across Scotland during Tuesday afternoon, lasting well into the evening in some places. Where these showers occur, 20 to 40 mm of rain is possible in a couple of hours with the potential for around 60 mm in 3 to 6 hours in some locations.

"This may cause localised flooding, especially if such totals occur over urban areas. Lightning and hail will pose additional hazards."

What to expect according to the Met Office

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities might become cut off if roads flood
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
